Steve Martin

Though this video is poor quality, it cracks me up every time. I can't deny it I am hard for Steve Martin, yes  I said it hard. I think he is so goofy and has a ridiculous humor, a dumb one really but overall he is just so...awesome. Yesterday I moved into my new place for next year--and the first thing that went on the fridge, was a picture of Steve Martin. When I wake up to get my orange juice or creamer to my coffee I want to see Steve Martin's smiling face. Can you blame me?

Did you know he almost gave up acting to become a philosophy teacher?? He took a lot of inspiration from his classes------>>>>> In my Time Studio class we read his opinions on comedy and pushing it to another level.

 "It changed what I believe and what I think about everything.... Something about non-sequiturs appealed to me. In philosophy, I started studying logic, and they were talking about cause and effect, and you start to realize, 'Hey, there is no cause and effect! There is no logic! There is no anything!' Then it gets real easy to write this stuff, because all you have to do is twist everything hard—you twist the punch line, you twist the non sequitur so hard away from the things that set it up".

(Fong-Torres, Ben (1982) "Steve Martin Sings: The Rolling Stone Interview". Rolling Stone February 18, 1982. Issue 363)

Steve Martin began to make comedy abstract in a sense--getting rid of punchlines like a painter gets rid of direct imagery. It isn't about a direct answer or joke being told--but many tied together at once left up to the audience to find.

After you know all that you MUST be hard for Steve Martin too. Seriously. c:

Andrew Jackson Jihad

I may be pretty late on this to those of you who have been devoted Andrew Jackson Jihad fans, because I have just recently discovered my love for him.

At first I wasn't sure how I felt about them--the music consists of strong guitar chords and strumming but there is a bigger emphasis on his voice--which had a tone to it I was not sure I liked at first. But it made me pay attention to the lyrics, and as I listened more I began more and more to enjoy his thoughts--They are morbid, negative but real and honest in a sense. It is a break from what I usually listen to---so it's really nice to have some Andrew Jackson Jihad pop up on my shuffle

Knitting

Many find the hobby monotonous or only interesting to old ladies with lots and lots of cats, but I disagree. These days, knitting is all the rage. Hats, scarves, gloves. Jeez just make them yourself! It really is not that hard and you can fit it in to your schedule so easily, I mean getting coffee with the gals? Knit while you talk. Going to dinner and then movies? You can take your knitting. Uh train rides? duh make a hat. It is a pretty portable process. But for real---build your dexterity. It is important.

Now get out those needles and make some Christmas presents for next year!

Annelise, My Bitch

Across the hall sleeps a sassy broad, my scandalous neighbor Annelise. Over the year I have become her Kramer, randomly bursting into her room for fashion advice or good conversation. When it comes to Annelise you are always entertained with a good story when you stop by her room. Most recently she informed me about an encounter with her former lover aka THE SLUT. You know who you are...Besides humorous ranting on a boy being a man whore, you are always guaranteed good quality "dicking around" time when your day has been a "cluster fuck"...both terms of Annelise's... As you sit on her floor jamming out to "Bad Kids" by The Black Lips Annelise wanders her room in cut-off booty shorts that she accessorized with an upside satanic crucifix patch. But don't be misled, Annelise is not your typical "rocker girl" that might frown upon high fashion or heels. Annelise who also idolizes Elizabeth Taylor along with The Who,  has modeled and is majoring in fashion merchandising. This seems somewhat unexpected with her, when she is so down to earth in personality. I could go on and on about pre-concieved notions and stereotypes when really what I am trying to say ultimately about my good neighbor Annelise, is she truly is genuine. You don't get what you expect, and she is real. I will very much miss her saucy attitude next year, her open advice, and random conversation such as "I think I'd be a real good sex therapist" that always cracks you up when you are having a bad day. So here is to Annelise! Let us raise our mascara brushes and Ted Nugent records to a one-of-a kind gal c;

Just A little band called Tennis. Perfect for the season...

Byrd Theater

Last night I went to a 9:30 showing of True Grit at the Byrd theater in Carytown. Not only does True Grit have entertaining dark humor, action, and uhh Jeff Bridges...but the ticket was an unbeatable price of $2! The popcorn was not nearly as expensive as a regular movie theater and before the movie started the "Mighty Wurlitzer" theater organ rose from the floor--yes it came from underground. and Bob Gulledge graced us with various oldies, finishing off with a little Free Bird haha This only occurs on Saturday nights but has been a tradition since the theater opened in 1928. The Byrd theater shows second hand movies but I swear it's worth it. It is non-profit and seats 1300. So now that it is getting warmer I definitely recommend a bike ride to Byrd for a $2 movie if you're ever bored.

Irish Step Dancing

Today at the Intercultural Festical young Irish Step Dancers pranced on to the stage in Monroe Park. Their bright costumes caught the crowds attention right away. You just couldn't help but be lured in. Oh and don't get me started on the hair. Bouncy curls and crowns twirled and rotated to the music. This performance reminded me of a girl who used to be in my Algebra II class, Shirley Brewer who thrived daily on Irish Step Dance. On competition weeks she would sometimes inter class with the green decorative costume crown because she believed it was a necessary act of spirit, confidence, and grace that all Irish Step Dancers should possess. She listed these three attributes oh so delicately to me with her bony fingers when I complained to her about the green glitter that was trickling down onto my math work. Green sparkles floated around my f(g(x)) functions i guess in a way gracefully out of place. That is really the best way to describe Shirley Brewer, gracefully out of place. Not really such a bad thing. Wonder if she is still dancing...
