Exploitation or Art?

Recently in my surface research class we viewed the work of a photographer, Chris Verene, who has become famous from documenting moments of small town relatives in his rural hometown in Illinois.

"crystal at eighteen"

But is it fair? these moments are so personal, and they are publicized by this artist--

"the pregnancy test"

The images themselves are very everyday--photos some in my class felt they could take. But why are they compelling in a sense?
the warm lighting, the characters he creates (real people)----->It makes you want to know more or have some sort of understanding of their life.
"Becca, Autumn, and Destiny"

I could go on and on about his work really--how it reveals significance on everyday, family, etc.
How he angers me by milking his hometown friends and family to become successful with his art career...

What is the price of success in art? in anything? Is what he's doing fair??
